Introduction to DDE

The Deep-time Digital Earth (DDE) project is a global scientific research initiative designed to deepen our understanding of the Earth’s past, present, and future through the use of big data and artificial intelligence technologies. By integrating massive datasets across geoscience fields, including geology, climate, biology, and environmental sciences, the project aims to construct a multi-dimensional, high-precision, and dynamic model of the Earth system. Serving as the information support platform for IESO 2024, the DDE platform provides information services to the DMT.

The core objectives of the DDE project include:

  • Data Integration: Integrating and standardizing Earth science data from disparate databases and publications worldwide into a unified data platform.
  • Model Development: Developing new Earth system models that leverage machine learning and artificial intelligence to enhance predictive accuracy and dynamic modeling capabilities.
  • Deep-time Understanding: Gaining insights into the Earth’s evolutionary patterns and mechanisms over billions of years by analyzing historical data, including the interactions among the atmosphere, oceans, biosphere, and lithosphere.
  • Addressing Challenges: Using the research findings of the Deep-time Digital Earth to provide scientific evidence and solutions for addressing global challenges such as climate change, biodiversity loss, and natural resource management.
  • Initiated by the International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS), the DDE project represents the collective effort of hundreds of geoscientists worldwide. It is expected to promote data sharing, interdisciplinary collaboration, and technological innovation within the geoscience community, significantly contributing to sustainable human development.
